Jawaharlal Nehru & his Kashmir Policy

Posted on

Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, the man who played the pivot role in Indian independence and subsequently went on to be crowned as India’s first Prime Minister. A monumental architect and frontline activist of Mahatma Gandhi’s pool of freedom fighter, who faced all kind of British atrocity used to deviate him from achieving the goal set of a free India and subsequently spent several years in jail as a political prisoner. All of his leadership and a visionary skill lead to accolade him as the 1st Prime Minister of free India with task in hand to move the nation upwards.

Along with visionary skill, Mr. Nehru was ruthlessly ambitious as well. He has sworn in as the leader of a country which lacks far behind in term of science, technology and 20th century’s engineering skill already developed by other country. Candle light focus to establish the nation in Global picture and at the same period he has also shown intention to figure out himself as universally acclaimed leader. Till independence, he lived in the shadow of Mahatma Gandhi and first occurrence for him to twist the scenario upside down hailed once he took charge at PMO.

These high ambition and self ego encouraged Mr. Nehru to initiate courageous and proactive decision making. Grievous decisions are authorized to exhilarate a certain segment simply to actuated national growth apart from picturize himself as a leader with Universal values. One of strong and quite unusual decision was to tabled “Jammu & Kashmir” issue at United Nation. It is one of the decisions which astound many of his colleagues and could have been eluded for the sake of national integrity.

On the day of Independence, along with India and Pakistan hundreds of colonial state got freedom. On the course of signing treaty of independence with last British Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten all top bracketed leader mutually agreed to provide equal opportunity for all colonial state to choose with whom they will merge. Hari Singh the then King of Jammu and Kashmir announced: “we will not select either of India and Pakistan. Jammu and Kashmir will be a separate and independent country instead.” India acknowledges the wish with immediate effect and approves them as a separate country. On 22nd October 1947, nearly 2 month after receiving the freedom, Pakistan attacked J&K with desire to get it inside its geographical area. Realising his inability to evacuate the Pakistan soldier armed with modern weapons, Maharaja of J&K Mr. Hari Singh, seeks for intervention from Indian Government. Then Home Minister Sardar Patel agreed to intervene with condition of Mr. Singh signing Instrument of Accession with Union of India. Sardar Patel enforced the Indian Army to March and force Pakistani soldier’s withdrawal from valley once Mr. Singh has signed the treaty.

In due course of time period, Pdt. Nehru initiated a historical decision without taking then Home Minister Sardar Patel into consensus and the decision was to floor the Jammu & Kashmir at UN as he wished the UN to intervene and resolve it outside battle ground. United Nation intervened and instructed both parties to stop war with immediate effect. With acceptance to proposal, Jawaharlal Nehru asked Indian army to maintain status quo. After protracted negotiations a cease-fire was agreed to by both countries, which came into effect. The terms of the cease-fire as laid out in a United Nations resolution of 13 August 1948, were adopted by the UN on 5 January 1949. In the quest of reaching an agreement Mr. Nehru forgot that two-fifth of Kashmiri land including the most populated and fertile areas went on to Pakistani ways.

It was not the only mistake of Mr. Nehru. To dignify himself as a secular figure, Mr. Nehru joined hand with Sheikh Abdulla, a strong Muslim leader and founder of National Conference. Mr. Abdulla argued J&K is free to merge with India, but at the same time interest of Kashmiri Muslim needs a proper care. Special packages and facilities have to be provided to ensure their safety. Pundit Nehru again gracefully agreed and instructed Dr. BR Ambedkar, the then Law minister to amend law accordingly. Dr. Ambedkar disagreed quoting two different law in one country can cause disarray and may even lead to political chaos. Mr. Nehru instructed Mr. Patel to make a consensus and left for foreign tour. He had also agreed the UN’s clause to reach the general public of J&K and seek them for general voting to help them understand in which side of border they want to live.

Many of the critics condemn Nehru’s policies on Kashmir. They believe Mr. Nehru has kept his personnel ego before national interest. They further went on to say Mr. Nehru preferred UN ahead of army intervention only to make the Universe realise his gesture for Global peace and that might endorses his candidature for “Nobel Prize of Peace” though there is no document to justify the statement. Instead the critics quote a few consequences as a part of justification.

1. When Ruler of Jammu & Kashmir signed the Accession treaty with complete legal authority, there was no room of negotiation with any other party.
2. Keeping interest of Muslim community from J&K is a nice gesture. But at the same time the same gesture has to be demonstrated for other community like Hindu.
3. Why to go to United Nation when we ourselves and resolve it.
4. Why to accept UN’s instruction of cease-fire when two-fifth of land is in opposition’s custody. Either instruct them to move away else force them to do so and follow UN’s instruction.
5. Role of a popular and designated leader is to resolve the conflict, rather not to prolong it.

Above all we confess that Mr. Nehru has done the hard task of starting from base level and all infrastructural development visible today is a part of his long term vision. Still he had made a few mistakes, especially in the issue of Kashmir. An issue still unresolved and his role is under scrutiny.
A debate that might end with closure of Kashmir conflict else may prolong further.

Washington (CNN) – As terrorism increasingly becomes a tactic of warfare, the number of attacks and fatalities soared to a record high in 2012, according to a new report obtained exclusively by CNN.

More than 8,500 terrorist attacks killed nearly 15,500 people last year as violence tore through Africa, Asia and the Middle East, according to the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism.

That’s a 69% rise in attacks and an 89% jump in fatalities from 2011, said START, one of the world’s leading terrorism-trackers.

Six of the seven most deadly groups are affiliated with al Qaeda, according to START, and most of the violence was committed in Muslim-majority countries.

The previous record for attacks was set in 2011 with more than 5,000 incidents; for fatalities the previous high was 2007 with more than 12,800 deaths.

We are not the people responsible for doing this. The plan was already worked out and set to be floored on 16th of May, the election result declaration day itself. The whole role play of increase in fare is UPA government’s responsibility and they are the people to be blamed rather than us. It was the statement of our Railway minister after announcing the hike in passenger and goods fare.

Electricity supply system in Delhi has experienced a huge functional failure this summer. Opposition party who ruled the National capital for a decade and half has come is on road for demand of uninterrupted power supply. They feel the current government yet to complete first month in office and a party in charge of office for forty-nine days has the complete responsibility. In the reverse, the ruler has a story of their own. When in power, the governments don’t even bothered to have a look on available resources of power transmission system and never pressed the distribution company to improve the quality of infrastructure and other transmission system. Outcome of this negligence is a result of huge disaster when storm strikes the capital city.

What stated above is two of recent high profiled blame games that most of the people irrespective of social and organizational stature loves to play. Taking blame or responsibility for strong or harsh decision is not everybody’s cup of tea. Self executed decisions are strongly condemned and all obstacles that result a forcible decision making atmosphere are published in media to let the people know. It is what called as blame game. One person blaming the other and so on to make it a continuous process even if strong decision is a properly formulated one and honest assessment will only be beneficiary for society.

In contrary all of us put both hand forward in at the time of soft and people friendly plan declaration, though this type of planning will be helpful for short goals only. How plans are formulated and the process by which it has been executed remains the prime agenda of each conversation. The whole world was sleeping and it was me who started the brainstorming to formulate the success plan: is the kind of impression all wants to make.

It is nice to be in the good book of general public and our society. At the same time one must understand a strong decision is also very much essential for national growth and today most of us are ready to accept it. Rather than playing blame game, one should make the people understand the real picture and help him understand how he can be benefited in a long term. It is the role and responsibility of decision making authority to stand strong and put the blue print in front of all beneficiaries and help them understand the long term advantages, the accurate execution plan and evaluation process.

Time has come when we say no to blame game. We must stand strong by the side of deciding authority who takes strong decision in the interest of national growth. It will help us and our society.

The wait is over and so does the threatening call of support withdrawal. With a lot of hick up & patch up work, the Government of Republic of India has successfully completed its scheduled term in 15th loksabha as the election commission has revealed election date for 16th loksabha. Every individual is rushing with all guns blazed to book a berth as participant in general election. Be it common public or political leaders or even the media (both print & electronics), there is only one common point agenda to discuss, advantages and goodwill of front they belongs to in comparison with rival front. All fronts are geared up to make journey of their rival an arduous one. Group building has become an incessant process for the birds of a feather. The top bracketed leaders are teaching the real meaning of “travelling the length & breadth” and “living out of a suitcase” just to ensure increase of support basket in multiple. Every individual is ready with his parameter of measurement and rating the others through his own evaluation process.

At this point when every politician is trying to acclimatise himself with voters, the prime objective is classification of role play for each of the group and whose task evaluation requires utmost priority in this context is of our politician. It is the pool of activist which either currently ruling or living with a desire to rule the nation.  These activists’ works in group empowered with a set of legislative principle and functions as per predefined guideline. In the election period, they travel all across the territory to meet the voters and seek for their vote either to be casted in their favour or the person ideologically bonded with them. The primary job of a politician is to exploit every opportunity of attraction building and bringing in a flood of people into his fold.

Once we have a fair idea about the work ethic related to political leader and in course of routing through their daily activity we came to know a terminology called voter. It is the mass of general public who with the utilization of his voting right elects the part to form government. Before making a garlanded welcome to the politician, he must observe, analyse and review all aspects and then only bring his voting right in force to ensure the victory of a leader. One important job of a voter should be to squeeze all dazzling commitments of politician and segregate the facts from contrivance.

In the process of election one more front that plays important role is the media. The prime objective of media is to helps general public in the analysis process of each individual politician about their good & bad aspect. The media also reviews all job done by government during their tenure and compares them with promises made prior to coming to power. The media also make sure that commitment made by political activists or parties are based on the pillar of reality and not a treachery one.

Now with role play of every group is being cleared, we are all set to evaluate task accomplishment in comparison with predefined commitment. Even a common man has to be aware of the fact that by the time a leader in power is marching to justify his candidature; the prime motive should be to let the people know his achievement during the tenure in power centre. He has to be all prepared with data base of task accomplished with respect to commitment made in any time for reply. The leaders putting their candidature against the existing one should have a flow chat complete in all respect with them to counter the plan and policy of existing leader about how better they can serve the country if opportunity falls on their way. All above statement needs a scrutiny in gentleman’s spirit with support of fact sheet and available date to make the things trust worthiness. Once the growth plan properly tabled and reviewed, then the general voters should analysis the brand of his liking to ensure voting in his favour.

Here comes the big question, does everybody playing their role with honesty. Are we aware of the default in our part of task or even does we know what & how to accomplish the duty. I am quite sure for a big reply of yeah if we reach to public with above query. Go deep inside and all will acknowledge their inefficiency and lack of awareness on the prospective data base require interrogating and electing eligible candidate.

In general when we witness the election campaign of other nation like US or Europe, the talks has been all about development plan, recession control and execution map to counter unemployment. The same has always played a role of invisibility on the speech of our politician, who rather prefers to count the non performing attributes of their counterpart & educates the public why vote should not be given to those candidates by exercising political turmoil. The talks regarding the women empowerment and identification of more job opportunity has been inserted in election speech with no one having a blue print of how to execute.

The reality discovered at this point of discussion is we the voters have never looked for a penetration insight the agenda as well. None of political leaders are made answerable towards their service extended to common pupil. We people are being fooled by leaders who design measuring parameter suitable to their need and hence they are declared victorious by themselves only, which we accept gracefully. We the peoples also have our brand of political party in relation to our caste & religion with no one having time to have a little glance over it.

With the election is in full swing and all party has declared their representative across the nation , all wanted from the educated and socially responsible Indian citizen is to ensure accurate reply of a few query  in the quest of the deserving candidate and the process has to be an incessant one.

  1.        Does the candidate is aware of social issue of the constituency.
  2.        Is he educationally qualified enough to put our issue in centre stage.
  3.        Does he have any plan for social growth of his constituency and whether it is feasible in real life application.

One must confess the bottom line truth which says reply to question mentioned above are as simple as nursery rhyme and anyone with an intensity to work for growth of nation should have the reply to those. We should not forget that one will be able to put finger on other only when he has accomplished his task with sincerity and honesty. Our attributes should not be deviated as a result of chaos created by politician for their self benefit. We all know a sincere and ethical Indian can build a strong and powerful India.
